Community Design Services
PROJECTS 2005-2007
School Libraries Project Eight architecture firms donated their time and talents to supply designs to the School Libraries Project, transforming the libraries on Capitol Hill into state-of -the-art learning centers. Three of the libraries were built last summer. The Opening Ceremony and Ribbon Untying Ceremony October 23r, 2006 included remarks by Superintendent Clifford Janey and Tommy Wells of the Board of Education. Lawlor Architects and Studio27 designed the Brent Elementary School library.
Meditch Murphey Architects designed the Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School Library
The Catholic University Design Collaborative (CUAdc) designed and built the library at StuartHobson Middle School.
CUAdc won the ProBono Publico Award for their work at Stuart-Hobson. David Shove-Brown, AIA (back left) was the CDS Project Manager for the School Libraries Project.

Far SW-SE CDC. /Atlantic Theatre. Architect Leora Mirvish, AIA of Quinn Evans Architects provided conceptual plans for the total renovation of an abandoned movie theatre in Ward 8.
Friends Meeting of Washington. Architects Robert Nichols, Assoc. AIA, and Michael Ray, AIA provided consultation services and recommendations for adding handicap-accessible features to this historic structure.
Hine Junior High Courtyard. Now a blighted area of the school, soon to be a garden and performance space. Architects Missy and Joe Boyette, and landscape architects from Fitch Design Studio provided plans to renovate the courtyard.
Manna Project 1: Architect Steven K. Dickens, AIA of Walnut Street Development provided a design solution for Temperance Row, an alley project near the U Street/Cardozo metro. Project 2: Elevation drawings of an expanded warehouse that will provide live/work space for artists.
Marshall Heights CDC Bruce Carchidi, AIA, of WDG Architecture provided schematics for eight new townhomes for low-to-moderate income residents in the Marshall Heights community.
Martha's Table Richard Pinnell, AIA is offering strategic planning services for Martha's Table's five buildings on 14th Street, NW
McKinley High School Greenhouse Architects Leslie Louden, AIA of Nalls Architecture and Ernest Ulibarri, AIA of Fox Architects are providing an analysis of the greenhouse and solutions for its repair.
Miriam’s House Michelle Amt, AIA provided conceptual plans for a shelter for young homesless women in Ward 7. A dilapidated house (former brothel) on the site will be renovated for administrative offices.
M.O.M.I.E.S. Mentors of Minorities in Education provides after-school educational programs to children in Adams Morgan. Carlisle Slocum Bean, AIA, of WDG Architecture provided plans for renovating and expanding M.O.M.I.E.S. semi-detached rowhouse.
My Sister’s Place. Stephen J. Vanze, AIA of Barnes Vanze Architects completed plans for a new transitional shelter for women and their children. Diane Gordy, ASID of DGI Design Group is providing interior design services.
Robert Brent PTA Raymond Neush is providing conceptual plans for improving the school yard.

St. James Episcopal Church S.L. Hopkins of WDG Architecture is providing design concepts and cost estimates for improving the entrance to the church.
2003-2004
Academy of Hope 1501 Columbia Road, NW. Education and job training skills for low income and at-risk adults. Architect Paul Solon, AIA, provided programming and evaluation of space needs. Completed May 2003.

All Souls Unitarian Harvard Street , NW. Robert Schwartz, AIA, will provide consulting services for an environmental building audit. June 2004.
Anacostia Watershed Society 4302 Baltimore Avenue , Bladensburg. Environmental education organization. Architect Ward Bucher, AIA provided schematic drawings to reconfigure the office space and add energy-efficient features to this c. 1748 house. Completed April 2003.
Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network, Inc. (A-SPAN) 2708 South Nelson Street , Arlington . Jon Hensley, AIA, is providing plans for a shelter renovation. February 2004
Byte Back 815 Monroe Street , NE. Provides affordable computer training to under-served members of the community. Architect Jairo Delgado, AIA, evaluated the space for the purpose of obtaining a certificate of occupancy. Completed 2003.
ChildHelp USA 8415 Arlington Boulevard , Fairfax . Center for the treatment and prevention of child abuse. Architect Daniel Henderer of RTKL provided schematic drawings to enclose a children’s play area. Home Depot provided labor and materials. Project completed February 2003.
D.C. Developing Families Center 801 17 th Street , NE. Health clinic serving residents of Ward 5. Architect Michelle Scurfield, AIA, reconfigured the birth center for the purpose of expanding services to residents in Ward 5. Completed 2003.
Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) A study to develop a number of innovative designs for a variety of vending cart and kiosk types. Sixteen architects are participating in the study. January -May 2004.
Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative(FSFSC) 4601 Martin Luther King Avenue, SW , 3 rd Floor Suite. Nonprofit organization that offers family support services in Anacostia. Architect Paul Solon, AIA , provided conceptual plans to build out the third floor of Hadley Hospital to create administrative offices. Project completed March 2003.
HC/SC Community Action Group Capitol Hill. Architects from Torti Gallas and Partners will provide renovation and expansion plans for a community center that offers job skills to recovering substance abusers. June 2004.
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation 2175 K Street , NW. Melanie Giordanno with Barnes Vanze Architects provided preliminary evaluation of space needs. Completed 2003.
Judah Temple of Faith Seat Pleasant Maryland. Conceptual plans to convert a former barber shop into a church. New project, June 2004.
Lanier Place Tenants Association-- Architect Heejung Chun volunteered over 80 hours to produce drawings to support tenants’ efforts to purchase their apartment building in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Completed December 2002.
Latino Economic Development Meditch Murphey Architects provided schematic drawings to convert two apartment buildings into condos the tenants can purchase in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. Completed June 2003.
Metropolitan/Delta Adult Literacy Council, Inc. 1225 R Street , NW. M/DALC provides literacy and job preparedness skills for low-income, educationally deprived families in DC. Architect will evaluate office space needs. February 2004.
My Sister’s Place Confidential shelter for battered women and their children. Architect Steve Vanze, AIA, provided programming services, cost estimates, and conceptual plans for total renovation. 2003-
Neighborhood Legal Services 701 4 th Street , NW. Nonprofit legal services firm that represents the interests of underprivileged low and no income residents of DC. Susan Retz, AIA, and Tolu Odulami, Assoc. AIA, provided schematic drawings to reconfigure the office space and add handicapped-accessible features. Completed January 2004.
Refuge of Hope 10 P Street, NE. A faith-based organizations providing counseling services to youth and adults. GTM Architects is providing plans for total renovation of a former crack house into a community center for social service programs. March 2004.
SiNGA, Inc. 1548 8 th Street, NW . A textile design/retail training facility for teens at risk and welfare-to-work recipients. Architects Diane Taitt of GTM Architects and LaShae Ferguson of Devrouax & Purnell provided conceptual plans to build out the space and interior design services. Project completed April 2003.
St. Elizabeth’s Campus -- CDS provided facilitators for the DC Office of Planning community workshop to redevelop the site. May 2003.
Venture in Faith 2 Seventeenth Street , SE. Steven Schwartzman of Weihe Design Group is providing conceptual plans to renovate a small apartment building into housing for senior citizens. February 2004.
Woodlawn Cemetery - Benning Road, SE. Lee and Associates, landscape architects, are providing a conceptual strategic plan for the refurbishment of this historic cemetery. February 2004.
